Parables: The Mysteries of God’s Kingdom Revealed Through the Stories Jesus Told by John Macarthur is a great book for studying the parables of the Bible. The book explores why Jesus often spoke in parables, and what life lessons these stories can teach us. Some of my favorite chapters talked about the kingdom of God and justification by faith. I also liked reading about how the parables of the two servants, the ten bridesmaids, and the talents are all linked together. Macarthur provides good background information for each parable, and delves into their context and meaning. It was interesting reading more about the Pharisees, and I liked Macarthur’s analysis on the story of the Good Samaritan.

Macarthur writes in a clear, insightful manner, and the content is both explanatory and engaging. The book is well researched, and provides a thorough appendix, end notes, and index. Even if you’re very familiar with the parables of the Bible, Parables is full of thought-provoking points that allow you to further study these passages. The parables are just as relevant to Christians today as they were in Jesus Christ’s time, and Macarthur shows that these parables are not mere stories, but lessons about Christ’s truth, love, and light to the world.
