Becoming Phoebe is a novel by J. Michael Neal, telling the coming-of-age story of a Phoebe, a college hockey player who grew up in foster care. One of the reasons why I liked this book was because it felt unique. It didn’t seem like a cliche novel, churned out of a publishing house with a predictable format. It felt “new.” The dialogue and story had a realism to them. Though Phoebe is a hockey player, Becoming Phoebe is not a “sports book” as much of a character study and philosophical examination of the human spirit.
