In her book Home: How Heaven and the New Earth Satisfy Our Deepest Longings, Elyse Fitzpatrick talks about how humans long for Heaven – and how Heaven is like a perfected earth. Fitzpatrick writes in a happy, friendly tone. The strength of the book is that it makes readers think deeply about Heaven and the things that they long for.
Each of the twelve chapters ends with a set of homework-type reflection questions or prompts, such as, “In talking about animals, C.S. Lewis writes, ‘In heaven if you wanted a horse to ride you would walk up to the nearest herd and ask for volunteers – and the one you chose would be regarded as the lucky one.’ Respond.” The book could be nicely incorporated into a Bible study about Heaven.
Fitzpatrick’s book is a thought-provoking one, delving into themes of forgiveness, suffering, and faith. Home is a reminder that people need not fix their eyes on petty matters; there is a life beyond this one, and it is greater than we can imagine.
