Minding the Light by Suzanne Woods Fisher is a historical fiction novel set in 1662 Nantucket, examining the relationship between the whalemaster Captain Reynolds Macy and the likable, spirited protagonist, Daphne Coffin. Fisher’s writing is captivating, descriptive, and enjoyable to read.
I really liked the historical fiction aspect of the book, and I learned a lot about the culture of Nantucket Island in the seventeenth century. Daphne’s relationship with Captain Reynolds Macy is enjoyable to watch as it plays out, and their interactions are one of foundations that holds this great book together. Daphne Coffin is definitely a strong role model for girls, and Fisher wonderfully emphasizes the importance of faith and family.
