Growing God’s Church: How People Are Actually Coming to Faith Today by Gary L. McIntosh is an interesting examination of the growth of the modern church. I especially liked the chapter that discussed principles of effective evangelism, which pointed out that we should focus on relationship-building in evangelism, but also keep a balance between “truth and relationship” as we build relationships while spread the truth of God’s Word. McIntosh includes a lot of insightful bar graphs and statistics as to why people join churches, and the book is an interesting study on church membership and congregational retention. Churches that belong to the same belief system or denomination will often vary widely in factors such as size, sermon style, and traditional vs. contemporary environment, so it is interesting to explore what influences different individuals’ church choices.
