Safe House: How Emotional Safety Is the Key to Raising Kids Who Live, Love, and Lead Well by Joshua Straub, Phd, explores how to give your children emotional support, stability, and safety. The book is written from a Christian perspective, and the author shows how faith plays a major role in parenting. Straub discusses how to make your home a “safe house” for your children, complete with protective walls and a firm foundation. I especially enjoyed reading about the various psychology studies referenced in the book, as well as the end-of-chapter questions that analyze parenting styles. One of my favorite parts of the book was the Safe House Parenting Assessment, a 30-question quiz which describes what kind of parent you are. Though it’s not an extensive quiz, it does highlight the key principles that Straub believes a “safe” parent should have. From building needed boundaries to encouraging healthy independence, the book covers a wide range of topics.
