I’m Not Afraid, written by Lee Ann Mancini and illustrated by Dan Sharp, is an incredibly adorable children’s book, focusing on how our fears can be turned into faith through Christ Jesus. I read a lot of new books geared for young children, and Mancini’s Adventures of the Sea Kids books, which also include Fast Freddy and What a Bragger, are some of my favorites. Mancini has created an exciting underwater world full of unique sea creature characters, and Sharp’s beautiful and colorful drawings bring this world to life. As I look through the pages, I feel like I’m looking at drawings from an animated Disney movie. Additionally, the text blends nicely onto the illustrations.
I’m Not Afraid has a strong Christian message, reminding children how they can turn to God and trust in Him. The book is based on Psalm 56:3, “When I am afraid, I will trust in you.” The main characters, Susie and Rachel, are well developed. The relationship between Susie and her mom is sweet, and Susie’s mom gives her great advice. The setting of an amusement park makes the book even more fun, and I am sure that kids will be excited to read I’m Not Afraid with their parents.
