Phoebe’s Light

Phoebe’s Light by Suzanne Woods Fisher is an exciting novel that focuses on Phoebe Starbuck, an adventurous girl from 1867 Nantucket. The book is entertaining, but it is also educational, helping the reader learn more about Nantucket Island and the Quaker people in both the 17th and 18th centuries. (I even learned some archaic words from the text, such as ambergris and cat-o’-nine!) Fisher adds an intriguing sense of mystery into her book, and she paints her scenes using vivid description. The story had a nice pacing, and Phoebe proved to be an interesting protagonist.
