The Baker Compact Dictionary of Biblical Studies by Tremper Longman III and Mark L. Strauss is a nice (and conscise) dictionary of terms related to Biblical studies. I love how the book covers people (e.g. Charles Kinglsey Barrett), places (e.g. Ekron), and things (e.g. Dead Sea Scrolls) – with the majority of the dictionary focusing on things rather than people and places. The dictionary is both helpful and interesting, and would make a good gift for a theological student or anyone interested in Christianity. It is a fun book to pick up and suddenly learn the meaning of a few new terms! Just opening a single page taught me about Israel Finkelstein, form criticism, and formal equivalent translation.
