I recently read Sheila Wray Gregoire’s 9 Thoughts That Can Change Your Marriage, so I was looking forward to comparing it to 7 Secrets to an Awesome Marriage by Kim Kimberling, PhD. Of the two books, 7 Secrets was definitely my favorite. Kimberling is a professional counselor, and he discusses a wide spectrum of fundamental relationship principles, giving the readers very sensible marriage advice.
Most of the “secrets” that Kimberling talks about are basic, such as listening and being present, but he explains his ideas in detail, and illustrates them using stories about various couples that he counseled. To me, these stories were the best parts of the book, and it was interesting to see how different issues in the couples’ lives affected their marriages. Kimberling also discusses how he overcame small problems in his own marriage; he and his wife, Nancy, have been married for over forty years.
7 Secrets to an Awesome Marriage is a very enjoyable read, and it would be a great book for couples to read while in premarital counseling (or marriage counseling). The book is available here on Amazon.
