Dorothy J. Newton grew up surrounded by poverty and abuse, but her adult life was beginning to look different: she graduated from college (where she was a successful athlete) and married an NFL player. But Newton soon found herself in a terrible situation when her once-charming husband lost his amiable facade and became very abusive. In Silent Cry: The True Story of Abuse and Betrayal of an NFL Wife, Newton shares her story of abuse, recovery, and hope. The book sheds light on how difficult – and dangerous – it is to be in an abusive marriage.
Silent Cry is a well-structured book, and I really enjoyed reading Dorothy’s story, which not only chronicles her marriage, but also talks about her childhood, college years, and how she grew in her Christian faith. Dorothy is a very insightful writer, and she sends a message of encouragement and hope.
