Art Students League of New York on Painting: Lessons and Meditations on Mediums, Styles, and Methods by James L. McElhinney is a large, 294-page book that contains a mixture of drawings and written sections about art technique. My favorite drawings in the book were the landscape pieces, such as “Between Woods and Frozen Lake,” a pastel on sabertooth paper by Hipolito Torres Lopez. One of my favorite essays in the book was “Poetic Realism in Pastel.” I also really liked the multi-page interview with Frank O’Cain, who shared valuable insight about his work. I did not realize this book contained nudity; I received this book for review, though I would not choose to purchase it because of the nude drawings. However, I appreciated the book’s G-rated drawings as well as its written content.
