The children’s board book Precious Moments: Happy Harvest by Jean Fischer is a collection of short-and-sweet poems about autumn, geared for 2 to 4-year-olds. If I was just going to buy one autumn-themed children’s book this year, I would probably choose Pumpkin Patch Blessings by Kim Washburn, though Happy Harvest does have a nice selection of poems and illustrations.
I loved collecting Precious Moments figurines as a kid, so I enjoyed looking through the pages of Happy Harvest, which feature Precious Moments themed drawings. Along with poems by Fischer, the book includes Bible verses, short poems by famous authors (such as Robert Louis Stevenson) and traditional poems (such as “I see the moon, and the moon sees me, God bless the moon, and God bless me!”) One of my favorite pages, entitled “September,” showcases a quaint drawing of a little girl holding a basket of apples, along with a four-verse poem by Helen Hunt Jackson (“The goldenrod is yellow; The corn is turning brown; The trees in apple orchards[,] With fruit are bending down.”)
