In A Different Key: The Story of Autism by John Donvan and Caren Zucker traces the history of how autism has been viewed by society throughout the years. It is a compelling book. The authors weave the interesting stories of different people and families who were impacted by autism, showing how the time periods they lived in affected their situations.
I thought that the 10-page “Autism Timeline” at the back of the book was a very handy guide, starting in 1848, referencing a report by Samuel Gridley Howe, and ending at 2013, when Asperger’s was removed from the DSM-5.
