Unbound: Finding Freedom from Unrealistic Expectations of Motherhood by Jamie Sumner is a book about infertility, motherhood, and gratitude. It is a relatable, encouraging book, showing that a vast number of people often share the same struggles, but also share the love of a loving God. My favorite part of the book was reading about Sumner’s own motherhood journey. Sumner divides the book into four sections: the wanting, the waiting, the getting, and the appreciating. She takes the reader on a journey, showing the stories of women in the Bible, from Hannah, to Naomi, to Hagar. The book demonstrates how women have often faced similar experiences no matter what time they were born in history.
One of my favorite chapters was “The Upside” and God’s Humor, reminding us that there are laughable moments in the middle of darkness and despair. I like the guiding questions at the end of each chapter that allow you to reflect on that chapter’s contents. The book would especially be good for someone who is struggling or has struggled with infertility.
